Understanding Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs)

MOQs or Minimum Order Quantities are when a company allows you to order a small amount of product than it otherwise would. For example, the MOQ of most supplement manufacturers is 1,000 units. But a low MOQ might be 500 units or even 250 or less. Why are MOQs in place? Well, it involves several factors.

First is staff. In order to produce any product, all the ingredients, production and bottling must be scheduled. Next, the project has to be run on a production line and that process involves staff, management and quality control, which takes time and time costs money.

So to avoid unnecessary costs, most companies will offer incentives to get you to order more quantities of a product - 1,000 or more. This is usually the point at which a company will actually turn a profit on the production of the supplement.

How Low MOQs Can Help Small Businesses Save Money

Creative companies can always find ways to market and sell their products. There can be sales, bundles, partnerships and even giveaways. But one thing is always true - low MOQs are a great way to help any supplement business save money.

Simply put, there is a LOW RISK and a high potential reward when you order 250 units to put a new product into the market. You have a new idea? Order 250 units of a certain product and test it to see if it catches on and sells. There's really no better way to launch new products - at least for most companies.

Another huge benefit is to new companies starting up. One of the most common questions we hear are, "How do we get started in the supplement business?", and the answer is usually, "Just start with a small order and continue from there."

We all want that instant success, and it is possible, especially when you use all of the tools available to you as a business owner, including low MOQs.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls When Ordering Low MOQs

What can go wrong with MOQs? There are a few things to keep in mind. Low MOQs are great to begin with or to bring a new product to market. But along with the low order quantity is a higher per unit price tag.

One of the most common errors we see is to continuously order low MOQs. In most cases, you should be thinking about scaling as fast as possible. That's why you should avoid using low MOQ orders if possible by thinking ahead and placing larger and larger orders as you grow to lower your cost of goods and raise profits.

Another common mistake we see is failing to prepare for price variations. Things change in the world. Prices change. People change. We sometimes see that companies will use low MOQs to test but not be able to scale and thus lose a large portion of their sales as a result. It goes like this:

An order for Super Greens is placed for 250 units and it goes great - they sell out in a week. But, it takes another few weeks to order more product and receive it. So now the customers orders are stalled and customer service is overwhelmed. Potential sales are gone as customers go elsewhere.

This can all be avoided if you take into account potential success and are ready to handle it when it comes up. Think ahead and be prepared. If you have success with a product, be prepared to scale operations and to pour the coal on the fire because success can be instant, but sustaining a successful campaign or company can be very difficult if you are not prepared to grow it.

How to Build Your Brand with Low MOQ Orders

A brand is not a logo. It is what other people think of and about your company, products and services.

It would be impossible to go over all of the ways you could improve your brand, but one very simple way is to bring those new products you've always wanted to offer to your brand and TEST THEM. Yes, that one GREAT IDEA you've always had, that one. Low MOQs make it easy to create a product fast and offer it for sale. The process can take less than 30 days. It's difficult to be the first at something, but it's not impossible. And to "get in early" has been and will always be possible.

There are lots of historical examples of this - most people know the story of Apple.

Your brand is up to you, but with MOQs, you can add a new, "hot" product or products to your line incredibly fast with very minimal effort and expense. This simple action can redefine your brand, make it known to a new audience, or just support it. That's all up to you.

Creating a Unique Selling Proposition with Low MOQs

To make this a little more real, I wanted to tell you about a little experiment I ran. It was designed to really test this theory of "Low MOQ success" that a lot of our customers have seen.

To get this going, I had our team create a Super Greens product. This product is amazing. It's delicious, contains a bunch of vitamins, minerals - I mean everyone loves it. We have it here and the staff just love it. Even at meetings, we all drink it and it disappears.

So, I took this Super Greens product and I put a very generic label on it. Very simple. Just a white label with "SUPER GREENS" in green on it and some standard facts about it.

And then I had our design team create a great label for it. They spent hours on this thing. It was very nice. Very colorful, had all of the facts - "Made in the USA", "Apple Banana Flavor" - all that.

Then I took these products around the building to all of the staff and I asked them all a question. "Would you rather order 1,000 of these (and I held up the generic looking label)" or, "Would you order 250 of these for the same price?"

As it turns out, 78% chose to get the beautiful looking product.

Now, I'm not saying I agree, but that's what the survey showed. And what can we learn from that? Well, I learned that the label can be incredibly effective in selling a product, given the circumstances.
